Example case study

Lean and Innovation complement each other?

We use a Green support to identify the largest energy users in XYZ Machining Ltd. We identify their CNC Laser cutter uses more energy than any other element of your business. We use state-of-the-art energy simulation IES VE to model the energy use of the facility.

Does the Fiber Laser have any other manufacturing benefits?

We conduct a ‘Lean Plus’ programme with the company that identifies that the Fiber laser has 30% greater capacity than the current laser! Woohoo? Right?

Wrong!

We use various Lean Tools such as Process Mapping, Value Stream Mapping etc as well as Manufacturing Line Simulation software (such as Siemens Technomatix).

It is clear to us that the new Laser would not be line balanced with other elements of production. The process steps after the Laser may be slower and the new laser only results in a build up at work before these later process steps. Or perhaps the CAD department is not line balanced and cannot send work to the laser fast enough and therefore the laser sits idle.

The result is no increase in capacity and added pressure.

Our simulation states that the new laser with an additional 3D CAD Engineer will result in an increased output of 30%+.

Again, we could apply to Enterprise Ireland / Udaras / IDA for support under ‘Operational Excellence’.

Is there anything ‘innovative’ the new Fiber Laser opens up to us?

We can use funding called ‘Exploring Innovation’ to help you maximise the full potential of this new Fiber Laser. Maybe this new laser expands your business capability considerably such as having the ability to cut 3D as well as flat 2D. What new product or market offerings could this open up? Are these new products innovative?
